Tax on Plinko Winnings in Australia: AUD & Crypto Explained

The Australian Taxation Office building in Townsville, photographed at night from across the street

Recreational Plinko winnings are generally not taxable income in Australia, and recreational gambling losses are not deductible. If you win cryptocurrency and later hold it as an investment, selling or swapping it can produce a separate capital gain or loss. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) sets the cost base of crypto winnings at their AUD market value when you win them. A gambling business has different income-tax treatment. We explain these rules for individual Australian tax residents; the payment route alone does not decide the outcome.

Tax treatment does not authorise a casino to serve Australians. ACMA identifies online casinos as prohibited services under the Interactive Gambling Act. Read our Australian Plinko legality guide for that separate issue.

Plinko winnings paid in AUD

For a recreational player, an AUD win does not become assessable income just because it is large, paid by an offshore operator or received through a bank transfer. Under ATO ruling IT 2655, the question is whether the gambling constitutes a business. There is no dollar threshold in that ruling that automatically turns a jackpot into business income.

Suppose a recreational player deposits $200 AUD and later receives $650 AUD, entirely from their remaining deposit and Plinko results. Their session profit is $450. On those assumptions, the gambling profit is not assessable income, and the $650 receipt should not be labelled employment or business income merely because it arrived in a bank account. Save the account history showing its origin.

Losing that $200 recreational deposit does not create a deduction against wages. We recommend keeping the gambling budget separate from tax calculations. Our bankroll guide covers spending limits and expected losses.

Which crypto movements can trigger CGT?

Before classifying a casino deposit, check the terms and ledger: does the operator hold your coins, convert them to a different asset, or exchange them for an account balance? Apply the ownership and disposal rules to that evidence. The table separates each payment step.

Win crypto through recreational gamblingDisregard gains and losses directly from gambling for CGT. Record the won asset's market value at the win.Settled round, quantity won and contemporaneous AUD value.
Withdraw cryptoA movement alone does not establish a sale. Identify whether ownership continues and whether the casino converts anything.Withdrawal record, asset sent and wallet receipt.
Sell for AUD or swap BTC for another coinA disposal of investment crypto can produce a capital gain or loss.Sale or swap receipt and AUD proceeds.

A casino withdrawal is not automatically all winnings. It can contain unspent purchased coins, returned stakes and newly won coins. Do not reset the cost base of every coin to the withdrawal value. Likewise, the public guidance does not give a universal bookkeeping method for thousands of mixed Plinko rounds. We would give a tax agent the full ledger and account terms before choosing how to classify that history.

Our crypto Plinko guide explains the payment mechanics. For tax purposes, add ownership and conversion records to that payment trail; a wallet transaction ID alone cannot explain what happened inside the casino.

AUD calculations: a win, a sale and a loss

These are invented examples applying the ATO's published rules, not actual BTC or USDT market prices. They assume recreational gambling, identifiable winnings subsequently held as investments, and no fees or other capital gains or losses. Capital gain = disposal proceeds − cost base. The gain is an amount used in a tax calculation, not the tax bill itself.

An investment gain before betting

Suppose purchased investment crypto cost $800 AUD and you sell it for $1,000 AUD before funding a recreational session with that cash. You have a $200 capital gain before betting. Losing the entire $1,000 at Plinko does not cancel that gain: the recreational gambling loss is not a deduction or an investment capital loss.

A won BTC parcel rises before sale

Assume you win an identifiable 0.01 BTC parcel on 10 August 2026 when it is worth $1,000 AUD. You hold it as an investment and sell that same parcel on 20 September 2026 for $1,180 AUD. Its cost base is $1,000 and its capital gain is $180. The gambling win itself is excluded from CGT; the $180 is the later price increase. The holding period is under 12 months, so it does not qualify for the holding-period CGT discount.

Now suppose the casino only sends that parcel to your wallet on 1 September, when it is worth $1,120. Using $1,120 as the starting value would show a $60 gain and omit $120 of appreciation. The ATO's reference point is the win. Preserve the settled round record rather than using the withdrawal date by default.

The same parcel falls before sale

If the $1,000 parcel instead sells for $850, the investment disposal produces a $150 capital loss. A capital loss can reduce capital gains under the CGT rules; you cannot deduct a net capital loss from wages. That $150 loss comes from the asset's price movement after the win. It is distinct from any recreational Plinko betting losses.

A crypto swap creates an intermediate event

Take the $1,000-cost parcel again. You swap it for ETH worth $1,100 AUD, then later sell that ETH for $1,160 AUD. The BTC disposal produces a $100 gain. The received ETH has a $1,100 starting cost base in this simplified example, and its later sale produces another $60 gain. Record both events; the final bank receipt alone hides the swap.

A stablecoin can change value in AUD

Suppose an identifiable 100 USDT win is valued at $150 AUD when won and later sold as an investment for $155 AUD. The gain is $5 before fees. For an Australian tax calculation, values must be expressed in AUD. An unchanged token count does not establish an unchanged Australian-dollar value.

Business status, personal use and the CGT discount

IT 2655 assesses the organisation of gambling, its scale, connections to other business activities, the profit or pleasure motive, the role of skill versus chance, and whether the activity resembles a hobby. No single factor settles the question. A large win or frequent play alone does not establish a gambling business; calling yourself a professional does not settle it either. If your circumstances suggest a business, seek a registered tax agent's assessment or an ATO private ruling.

Do not assume a coin used for entertainment is automatically a personal-use asset. ATO guidance says crypto held as an investment is not exempt from CGT on that basis. Ask for a specific assessment if you intend to claim personal-use treatment.

For qualifying crypto investment gains, holding the asset for at least 12 months can make a CGT discount available. This does not exempt the entire sale or make the gambling receipt taxable. Capital losses, eligibility and your other income affect the final calculation. We have deliberately used short holding periods in our examples so they do not require assumptions about discount eligibility or your marginal rate.

Prepare the records before preparing the return

We recommend the following sequence because it lets an adviser distinguish a gambling receipt from an investment disposal without reconstructing your account from a bank statement.

  1. Export the casino history. Save deposits, withdrawals, settled bets, returned stakes, winnings, conversions and account terms. If there is no export, preserve dated screenshots and request a ledger from support. Export before closing an account.
  2. Download exchange transactions and wallet activity. Match transfers on both sides so the same movement is not mistaken for fresh income.
  3. Build an AUD valuation trail. For each identifiable won parcel, record the win time, token quantity, AUD value and price source. Keep disposal proceeds and acquisition costs for purchased coins separately.
  4. Reconcile the closing balance. List missing rounds, unexplained credits and differences instead of inserting guessed cost bases or treating the whole withdrawal as a prize.
  5. Review the classification with your tax agent where ownership, business status or mixed balances are unresolved. Then calculate and report the applicable investment capital gains and losses. Recreational gambling winnings themselves are generally excluded from assessable income; keep their evidence without entering them as business receipts.

The ATO requires crypto transaction records, including dates, counterparties, AUD values and exchange records. Its retention rule is five years from the latest of preparing or obtaining the records, completion of the transactions or acts, and the year the CGT event happens; records must also cover the applicable amendment period. Keep acquisition evidence while holding the asset. We suggest regular exports because losing casino access can remove the evidence of when a win occurred.

If you have only a withdrawal total today, first retrieve the casino ledger and exchange history. Next identify what was won, what was purchased and what was sold or swapped. Those facts determine the calculation; selecting a “gambling” label in software cannot replace them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply a US gambling-tax guide to my Australian return?

We would use Australian rules for an Australian tax resident. A foreign guide can address a different tax system; this page does not resolve obligations arising from dual residency or foreign citizenship.

What if my casino displays AUD but sends cryptocurrency?

Save both records: the displayed balance and the asset actually paid. A currency display alone does not establish what you owned or whether a conversion occurred. Give the settlement terms and transaction history to your tax agent.

Should I give my tax agent my wallet seed phrase?

No. Provide transaction exports, public wallet addresses and the relevant receipts. A seed phrase gives access to funds and is not needed to read the payment trail.
